Before you drive a car, your own or someone else's, make sure you are familiar with the controls, lights, emergency brake etc  and the location of:
1) The spare tire ( make sure it's in good condition and inflated fully ) and jack
2) How the jack operates
3) The area on the car chassis/frame where to place the jack

If you get a flat tire or tread separation when you’re driving:

* Keep both hands firmly on the wheel.
* Keep your eyes on the road.
* Do not move the steering wheel except for small adjustments that may be necessary to continue in your same lane of travel.
* Remove your foot from the accelerator.
* Do not apply the brakes.
* Allow your vehicle to coast and slow without braking.
* Identify where you can safely stop the vehicle outside the flow of traffic.
* When your speed is low enough and conditions permit, drive carefully out of the travel lanes.
* Park the vehicle. Turn on your emergency flashers. Have your passengers get out and stand a safe distance away.
* Summon help.
* Tackle changing a tire only if you can do so without placing yourself or others in danger.

Changing a Wheel Safely.

It is not advisable to change a tire on the freeway/motorway.
If you had to drive a considerable distance to get to the freeway shoulder the tire is,  most likely, ruined and getting off the freeway,  if you are within 200 yards or less from the offramp, and getting to a parking lot or quiet street (if possible)  is advisable.

NEVER change a wheel on the "Center Divider" shoulder, the area between the fast lane and the freeway divider.

Always park on level ground away from oncoming traffic.

Always place the gear shift lever in park or in gear in the case of a manual transmission.

Always set the emergency brake and remove the keys from the ignition.

Note: Park/emergency brake
The parking/emergency brake only works on the rear tires, so be careful!

After you have completed each of these procedures you will be ready to change the flat.

Get occupants of the car into a safe place away from traffic

Place a chock or a brick behind or in front of (depending on the road's incline) the wheel diagonally opposite one being jacked up.

Step 1: Remove the jack, spare tire and lug wrench. To prevent personal injury, remove the spare before raising the vehicle.

Step 2: Remove the wheel cover by prying it away from the rim using the flat end of the lug wrench. If your vehicle is equipped with custom wheel covers or locking lug nuts, consult the owner's manual for proper removal instructions.

Step 3: Next loosen each lug nut two full turns. Never remove the lug nuts completely during this step.

Step 4: Following the instructions on the jack or in the owner's manual, place the jack under the vehicle as recommended by the car's manufacturer.

NOTE: Jack must go under FRAME not on a weak body part which cannot bear the weight and might collapse.

Some cars have special jacks and slots on the side of the car for the jack (most notably Volvos and BMWs).

they are snug, not tight. This is just to help align the rim to the hub and hold the tire in place until the car is lowered.

Step 9: Now lower the tire to the ground and fully tighten the lug nuts. During this step you will want to use a cris-cross pattern. This will help assure that the lug nuts are tight and that the rim is properly aligned to the hub. After you have completed changing a flat tire, put the lug wrench, flat tire, jack and wheel cover back into the trunk. As soon as possible, have a mechanic recheck the lug nuts and place the wheel cover back on

Many cars have small “temporary use only” spare tires. These are designed for limited use, and you shouldn’t exceed 45 to 50 mph when you’re using one. You can drive on a temporary spare for some time, but not indefinitely—restrictions for the spare will usually be printed on the tire, or you can find them in the owner’s manual

Never drive a car without a good spare tire. Get the flat replaced as soon as possible.
