Starting to trace your family?

Download some free software

Begin with all the knowledge you have in your head now.

Fill out a pedigree tree, on paper or with software, with as much information as you know, fill in as much as you can based on memory.

Look in family records or in storage rooms, attics or basements, you may find bibles, letter, pictures, scrapbooks, baby books, diaries, certificates (birth-marriage-death), schools records etc.

Do a search on websites that compile such information, LDS site, Ancestry.co.uk etc

Talk to relatives, especially those in "old countries".

Don's forget your pedigree chart when you do this.

Try different spellings of surnames, for example, people who came into the U.S through Ellis Island, in the early days, may have had their names taken phonetically by the Immigration official taking the information.

Tracing family roots can become a huge project, make notes somewhere on the sources you used to get information.

Get historical data on the time periods, cities, areas and countries involved in your research.

Keep interested family and friends updated on your progress, as they learn more and become excited, it may encourage them to help with the project.

The Famine Ship Records

If you are  among the millions of Irish-Americans whose ancestors emigrated directly from Ireland or via Liverpool to America during the Great Famine of 1845-50 find out if they sailed on the trusted Jeanie Johnston, on one of the infamous coffin ships or on one of the several hundred other  vessels that sailed from Ireland around the time of the potato famine?.

Handwritten ships' passenger lists, completed on arrival at each  port, have been transcribed, indexed and made available online as the Famine Ship Records. The computerised database listing each Emigrant's Name, Age, Occupation, Date and Port of Arrival and, in some cases, their Address and Luggage Details, form an invaluable resource for those researching their family history and seeking their Irish roots.

Ellis Island, now a 27.5-acre site located just minutes off the southern tip of Manhattan Island, New York, is likely to connect with more of the American population than any other spot in the country. It has been estimated that nearly half of all Americans today can trace their family history to at least one person who passed through the Port of New York at Ellis Island. Now, nearly a century since the peak years of immigration, Ellis Island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the National Park Service.
