Home meat grinders, small appliances used to
grind boneless meat of almost any kind,
beef-pork-lamb-chicken etc to make hamburgers or sausage.
They vary greatly in price ($50-$200) and
quality, they come in electric or hand cranked models.
Most
meat grinders today are bought by hunters or those who raise
their
own meat, they can be very useful to consumers who do not like to buy
commercial ground products.
You can find attachments for home grinders
and mixers, my experience with those is thew tendency to "mush" the
meat rather than "grind', thus losing a lot of juice in the process.
I use a hand crank model at home, it grinds about 3 lbs per minute.
Both kinds work the same, meat is added
through a "hopper" and pushed slowly with a plastic plunger while
"cranking" with a handle, or, if electric, the motor turns a
meat shaft, called a worm, which pushes the meat throughy the
plate/knife combo, it comes out ground meat.
There are different size plates, size being
determined by the size of the holes in the plate, a 3/16" plate is
standard for home use.
There is quite a difference in price between
hand cranked and electric.
Hand cranked models are economical and appropriate for home use.
Home grinders are great for making sausage,
it allows the home owner to experiment with small batches.
Many different types of boneless meat can be
ground
into burger and sausage. Favorites are pork, beef and chicken, but any
boneless meat can be used.
Once you start making sausage and hamburger yourself you will never buy
commercial products again.
