A Resume
is a basic method employers use to get to know
applicants.
A well-crafted resume tells an employer about your
qualifications and experience, it can also
demonstrate your professionalism, communication
skills, and the quality of your work.
It helps form an employer’s first impression of you.
Each resume is unique, because it is a reflection of
an applicant, their experience, and career goals.
A resume should clearly represent a prospective
employee and how they match the employer’s needs.
Each
resume should be targeted to the employer or type of
position you are
interested in. It will directly link your skills and
background to the needs of the employer.
Because employers may have different needs to fill,
you should have different versions of your resume if
you feel suited to different positions.
The resume gets you in the door for an interview, at
which you can further sell yourself and your skills.
IThe information it contains should catch the
attention of the employer enough to get you an
interview.
Here are some suggestions for the minimum items a
resume should contain:
Personal Information
Name, school and permanent addresses, phone numbers,
e-mail address.
Optional: Fax number, home page URL.
Objective
The cover letter should indicate your desired
position, skills you wish to use, and field in which
you’d like to work.
Education
Your current or most recent educational institution,
location, degree received or
expected, major or concentration, graduation date.
Your school of study, thesis or major research
project, study abroad experience.
You MAY want to add our major GPA, relevant
coursework, high school.
Work Experience
All relevant jobs, any recent jobs, title,
organization, location, dates, brief
description of duties using action verbs, major
accomplishments or projects on the job.
You MAY want to add hours worked per week,
specialized training received, honors earned.
Activities
Volunteer experience, college clubs, sports,
professional associations.
Skills
Computer skills, specialized skills unique to your
field.
If applicable Foreign languages, computer,
specialized training or certification.
Honors/Awards
Suggested: Any unique or significant honors, awards,
scholarships.
Interests: Mention by name only, i.e. golf,
keep it short
Make the resume brief and to the point, in a clear
and readable format and relevant to the position
Resumes should have reasonable margins of .75 to 1
inch, 12 size font in Times New Roman.
Make it easy to read with short paragraphs and white
space to separate sections.
If you are creating a scannable resume use bold,
indentation for emphasis, do not underline or use
italics.
No spelling
errors or typos.
Emphasize skills over responsibilities.
Names are spelled out rather than abbreviated.
Information such as job title, dates, locations, and
organizations are listed consistently.
Avoid personal pronouns such as “I” or “me.”
Use
action verbs, avoid “Duties included...” or
“Responsible for...”
Phrases are short and to the point, no irrelevant
information.
When you are happy with your resume it should be
laser printed or type set. Do NOT use a dot matrix
printer or typewriter.
Use heavy bond paper with a light color, white or
ivory.
